撮影は楽しかったよ

ー：今回MVの撮影のために来日されたと聞いていますが、日本でのMVを撮影する事になったのはどうしてですか？

(You came to Japan to shoot an MV. How did shooting in Japan come to happen?)

Celine：RaphaelがPennacky（東京で活動してる映像作家で、わたしたちは彼の作品のファン）に「Astronomy」のMVの制作を打診して、それでわたしが東京まで飛ぶことになったの。Pennackyはケンっていう名前なんだけど、とてもクールな青年で、素晴らしいMVだけでなく新しい友達もつくれて嬉しいよ。

(Raphael reached out to Pennacky (a filmmaker based in Tokyo whose work we love) on making a music video for us for our song Astronomy, which I ended up flying down to Tokyo for. Pennacky, whose name is Ken, is such a cool guy and I’m so glad to have also made a new friend alongside such an amazing music video.)

ー：かなり短い時間での撮影だったと聞いていますが大変でしたか？

(I’ve heard that the shooting was done over a very brief period of time. Was it tough?)

Celine：大変なときもあったね。たとえば冬場の貴重な日射しを求めてケンと朝早くから撮影しないといけなかった。シンガポールは常夏の国だから、特に寒さには苦しめられたと思う。特に印象に残ってるのは屋上のシーンで、口パクをしながら飛び跳ねてはつらつとした印象を与えようと精一杯がんばってたんだけど、そのあいだも指はかじかむわ、顔は霜焼けるわって感じ。でもそれはさておいて、撮影は楽しかったよ。

(It was at times, such as how Ken and I had to start our shoot days really early in the morning, constantly chasing for daylight in the winter time. I struggled the most with the cold weather I guess, considering how Singapore is summer all year round. I remember the rooftop scene so well where I was trying my best to look as energetic as I can lipsyncing and prancing around when my fingers were just so frozen, I could feel frostbites forming all over my face. But despite all of that, I really had a lot of fun in the process.)

ー：日本では撮影以外でどのように過ごしていましたか？

(What else have you been doing while staying in Japan?)

Celine：ちょうど同じ時期に東京を訪れてたシンガポール出身の友達と遊んだり、東京の新しい友達とも会ったよ。For Tracy Hydeのアズサ（夏bot）や17歳とベルリンの壁のタクジとは今度のツアーでもまた会うね。あとは日本でわたしたちのCDを出してくれたレーベル、Inpartmaint Inc.のシンさんも。それ以外は美しい街を探索したり、いろいろなものを食べたり、寒さから身を守ったり！

(I hung out with some friends from Singapore who happened to be in Tokyo the same time I was. I also met up with some new friends from Tokyo including Azusa (For Tracy Hyde) & Takuji (17 Years Old & Berlin Wall) who we will be seeing again on our upcoming tour, and Shin-san from Inpartmaint Inc., the label that pressed our CDs in Japan. Apart from that, I’ve just been exploring the beautiful city, eating a lot of food and hiding from the cold!)

ー：今回が初の来日公演となりますが、このタイミングでジャパンツアーを行う事になったきっかけは？

(This is your first Japan tour. How did the Japan tour happen at this timing?)

Celine：わたしたちの音楽をベッドルームの外へ、母国の外へ、そしていずれは地域の外へ、世界中へ届けたいという気持ちはずっとあった。Sobsは昨年東南アジアを回っていて、日本はその延長として自然に思えたの！　日本はわたしたちが大好きな音楽……特にわたしたちのアルバム制作のインスピレーションにもなったインディ・ポップ、シューゲイズ、ドリーム・ポップのバンドたちをたくさん生み出した国で、わたしたちが好きなバンドたちと一緒に演奏できるなんて夢のよう。『Telltale Signs』がInpartmaint Inc./p*disによってCDでリリースされたことで日本でもリスナーが増えたし、みんなと会うのが待ち遠しいな！

(We’ve always wanted to bring our music outside of our bedrooms, outside of our home country and eventually, outside of our region and around the world. Sobs has played around South-East Asia throughout the course of the past year, and Japan felt like a natural progression to that! Japan is home to a lot of music that we love – especially with its vibrant scene of indie pop, shoegaze, and dream pop bands that inspired us even while we were working on the album – so playing alongside so many bands that we’re fans of ourselves is a dream come true. Our album “Telltale Signs” being reissued on CD by Inpartmaint Inc./p*dis also garnered us an audience in Japan, and we can’t wait to meet everyone!)

ー：今回のジャパンツアーはFor Tracy Hydeとの共催となりますが、彼らとはどのように知り合いましたか？

(This Japan tour will be co-hosted by For Tracy Hyde. How did you get to know them?)

Celine：わたしたちが所属してる超々DIYなレーベルのMiddle Class Cigars……うちのメンバーのRaphaelと親友のNigelが一緒にやってるんだけど……はいつでも東アジア全域の新しくてエキサイティングなアーティストたちをチェックしてるの。彼らが数年前にFor Tracy Hydeの音楽を見つけてきて、それからずっと夢中。Raphaelのお気に入りは「Her Sarah Records Collection」で、延々と語り続けてるよ。いまではわたしも彼らに夢中で、聴くのをやめられない！　日本でのツアーを思いついた時点でFor Tracy Hydeがぴったりだってみんな思ってたの！　ちょうどそのときにFor Tracy Hydeのアズサが「Telltale Signs」についてツイートしてくれたのを目にして、すぐさま連絡したの。

(Our very-very-DIY label, Middle Class Cigars – who is run by my bandmate Raphael and our good friend Nigel – has always been on the lookout for new and exciting acts coming up across the region. They discovered the music of For Tracy Hyde a couple of years ago and have been in love ever since. One of Raphael’s favorite songs is “Her Sarah Records Collection”, and he can’t stop talking about it. I’m so in love with their music now too, I can’t stop listening! When the idea to tour Japan came about, we knew that For Tracy Hyde was the best fit! It just so happened that we saw a tweet by Azusa (guitarist of For Tracy Hyde) about our song “Telltale Signs”, and reached out as quickly as we could.)

ー：会場選びやブッキングをFor Tracy Hydeと行ったと聞いていまが、どのような形でこれらを行いましたか？また、これまでに海外公演の会場やブッキングをSobs自身が直接行った経験は？

(I’ve heard that Sobs chose the venues and booked the bands with For Tracy Hyde. What was the process like? Have you ever chosen venues and booked bands for overseas gigs by yourselves?)

Celine：ツアーを組む過程はとても素晴らしいもので、For Tracy Hydeと一緒に新たなバンドやサウンドと出会えてすごく素敵だった。彼らと仕事できるのは大きな喜びで、一緒にツアーを組めて感謝してるよ。

多くの場合、わたしたちの海外公演は好きな現地のバンドとの共同作業で行なってるの……ちょうど日本でFor Tracy Hydeとやってるようにね！ときどき（敏腕の）プロモーターがライブを組んでくれることもあって、彼らはそれぞれの国のキッズがなにを求めてるか知ってるから彼らにも感謝してる。でもシンガポールではDIYのライブもたくさんやってるよ。ついこないだやったライブなんてあまりにDIYすぎてステージ上にモニター・スピーカーすらなかったの！

(It was a wonderful process, and it was so nice discovering new bands and sounds with For Tracy Hyde. They’ve been such a joy to work with, and we’re so thankful to have them onboard with us.

Most of the time, our overseas shows are done in collaboration with bands that we love from that country – much like we’re doing here with For Tracy Hyde! Sometimes our shows are put up by (amazing) promoters, and we’re thankful for them too because they know what the kids in different countries want. We do put on a lot of DIY shows back in Singapore though. We just played a show that was so DIY that we didn’t even have stage monitors to listen to!)

ー：シンガポール、日本以外の国ではどのくらいライブの経験がありますか？

(How much have you gigged outside of Singapore and Japan?)

Celine：主にインドネシア、フィリピン、タイ、マレーシア等の東南アジアの国で演奏してきたから、東南アジア圏外の国で演奏するのは日本が初めてだね！

(We’ve mostly played shows around South-East Asia such as Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia. Japan will be our first non South-East Asian country that we’re playing a show in!)

ー：（上記の質問で海外の経験があるようでしたら）印象的だった国はどこですか？

(Which countries left the strongest impressions on you?)

Celine：間違いなくフィリピンね。マニラではこれまでに2回演奏してるんだけど、街も人もいつもわたしたちの期待を裏切らない素晴らしいひとときをくれるの。向こうでたくさんの友達ができたし、行くたびに帰りが寂しくなるな。

(Definitely Philippines. We’ve played in Manila twice so far, the city and its people has never failed to give us an amazing time. We’ve made so many friends there as well and we’re always so sad to leave whenever we go there.)

ー：ジャパンツアーはどのようなツアーにしたいですか？

(What do you want the Japan tour to be like?)

Celine：ただステージの上で最高の時間を過ごして、できる限り最高のパフォーマンスをして、観に来てくれたあなたたちひとりひとりに楽しんで欲しい。それだけで満足！

(I just want to have a great time on stage, put on the best performance that I can and hope that every single one of you that come to our show enjoy watching us. That’s really all I need :))
